The specific athlete intro call question you never asked

You finish an intro call, the athlete seems keen, and you sign them on. Three months later they're quiet, their workouts are slipping, and then they cancel. You replay the call trying to figure out what you missed.

You probably missed one question, or you just didnt ask it specifically enough.

Most coaches use intro calls to convince a potential athlete that working with them is worth it. This is understandable. You need clients. But it means you spend the call selling, and you never learn whether the athlete in front of you is actually a good fit.

The question that changes this: "What would success look like to you in this coaching relationship, six months from now?"

It sounds simple. Most athletes struggle to answer it. And that struggle tells you exactly what you need to know.

An athlete who has a real answer, something specific and internal ("I want to understand how to pace myself so I can race by feel") is telling you they have a framework for the relationship. They know what they want from you beyond results. These athletes stick around because they're measuring something controllable.

An athlete who gives a vague answer ("I just want to get faster" or "I need someone to hold me accountable") isn't automatically a bad fit. But they're measuring success by outcomes they can't fully control, and by a feeling they expect you to create for them. When results are slow or motivation dips, they decide the coaching isn't working, and they leave.

The value of this question isn't that it filters out bad athletes. It opens a conversation you would otherwise never have. You learn what the athlete actually needs, what they're anxious about, and whether their expectations are realistic. You can realign them in week one instead of discovering the gap in month three.

There's a second benefit. Coaches who ask this question stop saying yes to every inquiry. You start to recognise fit before you've invested weeks in a relationship that was never going to work. Your roster gets smaller and more stable. You spend less time chasing engagement from athletes who were never fully bought in.

The question also sets a tone. From the first call, the athlete understands this is a two-way relationship with defined expectations, not a service they consume on the side.

This week: On your next intro call, ask it near the end. "What would success look like to you, six months from now?" Listen for specificity. That's your signal.
