Your athletes don's understand recovery

Most athletes don't really understand what a recovery week is for. They just feel undertrained. The coach who explains the why gets better compliance. The one who doesn't leaves room for doubt, and doubt slowly erodes trust.

Your athlete messages on day two of their recovery week. "This feels really light. Are we still on track?"

You send back a quick "yes, it's all part of the plan" and move on.

They probably accept the answer. But they still don't really understand it.

So next time the plan feels too easy, too hard, or just different from what they expected, there's a little less certainty that you know exactly what you're doing.

That's how trust gets chipped away. Not usually through one big mistake, but through small moments where the athlete doesn't understand the plan and has to fill in the gaps themselves.

Recovery weeks are a perfect example.

Every experienced coach knows why they're there. They're part of the process of absorbing training, managing fatigue and preparing the athlete for the next block of work.

But none of that is obvious from the athlete's side.

They just feel like they're doing less.

And when people feel like they're doing less, their mind starts looking for an explanation.

Maybe the plan isn't working.

Maybe the coach has backed off.

Maybe my fitness isn't where it should be.

When context is missing, athletes create their own.

The fix is not complicated.

One paragraph at the start of the week. In the plan notes, in a quick message, wherever your athletes are most likely to see it.

"This is a lighter week by design. The goal is to let your body absorb the work from the last three weeks so you're ready for the next block. You might feel like you should be doing more, but resist the urge to add volume. If it feels like you aren't working hard enough, that's ok, that's how it's supposed to feel"

The problem is, if you coach a decent number of athletes, you end up writing versions of that same explanation over and over again.

That's exactly what "Snippets" in Training Tilt are for.

Write your recovery-week explanation once, save it as a Snippet, then drop it into an athlete message or note whenever you need it. You can still tweak it for the individual athlete, but the important context is already there.

The same goes for taper weeks, missed sessions, race-week nerves, testing blocks, strength phases, or any other part of training that athletes commonly misunderstand.

The value isn't just saving a few seconds of typing.

It's making sure the explanations that build trust actually get sent consistently.

Because coaches who explain the structure of their plans don't just get better compliance.

They build athletes who understand the process well enough to trust it when training doesn't feel how they expected.

An athlete who understands why a recovery week exists will usually follow it.

An athlete who doesn't might still follow it, but with a little question sitting in the back of their mind about whether this is really what they should be doing.

Do that often enough and trust starts to disappear.

Takeaway: Before your next recovery week lands, create a Recovery Week Snippet in Training Tilt with two or three sentences explaining what the week is for and what the athlete should expect to feel. Then use it every time a recovery week comes around.

Good coaching isn't only writing the right training. It's making sure your athletes understand why it's right.
